LAHORE: Pakistan marked Labour Day with renewed calls for better wages, safer working conditions, and stronger protection of workers’ rights across the country. Observed annually on May 1, the day honours the contributions of millions of workers who play a vital role in driving the nation’s economy.
Labour unions, and civil society organizations held rallies, seminars, and awareness campaigns in major cities, highlighting challenges faced by workers, particularly those in informal sectors. Speakers emphasized the need to implement minimum wage laws, ensure social security coverage, and improve workplace safety standards.
Despite legislative progress, many workers continue to face low wages, job insecurity, and limited access to healthcare and pensions. Labour representatives urged authorities to take practical steps to address these issues, including stricter enforcement of labour laws and action against exploitation.
Special attention was also drawn to women workers and daily wage earners, who often experience unequal pay and lack of job protection. Experts stressed that empowering workers through fair policies and skill development is essential for sustainable economic growth.
Labour Day serves as a reminder that protecting workers’ rights is not only a legal obligation but also a cornerstone for building a just and prosperous society in Pakistan.
