ISLAMABAD: White Cane Safety Day was observed across Pakistan to raise awareness about the rights, mobility, independence and safety of visually impaired people.

The day highlights the importance of the white cane as a symbol of independence and a vital mobility tool that helps people with visual disabilities navigate their surroundings safely and confidently.

Various awareness activities were organised by social welfare organisations, educational institutions and disability rights advocates to promote an inclusive and accessible environment for visually impaired people. The activities emphasised the need to ensure equal opportunities, accessible public spaces and improved facilities for persons with disabilities.

Speakers stressed that visually impaired people should be provided with equal access to education, employment, healthcare and public services. They also urged the relevant authorities to improve pedestrian crossings, footpaths, public transport and other facilities to make public spaces safer and more accessible.

They called on motorists and the general public to respect the rights of white cane users, give them priority and assistance when needed, and help create a society free from discrimination.

White Cane Safety Day is internationally observed on October 15 every year. The occasion serves as a reminder that visually impaired people can lead independent and productive lives when provided with appropriate support, accessible infrastructure and equal opportunities.

The day also calls for collective efforts by government institutions, civil society and citizens to promote dignity, inclusion and the protection of the rights of persons with visual disabilities.
