LAHORE: On the directions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Punjab Government has launched Pakistan’s first government-led initiative to provide advanced myoelectric bionic prosthetics to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) under the Social Welfare & Bait-ul-Maal Department.

Provincial Minister for Social Welfare &  Bait-ul-Maal, Sohail Shoukat Butt attended the distribution ceremony as Chief Guest, while Secretary Social Welfare Javed Akhtar Mahmood and DG Social Welfare Tariq Qureshi were also present on the occasion.

The bionic prosthetics, based on artificial intelligence, function through muscle-generated electrical signals. A mobile application will be used to monitor beneficiaries’ progress. In the first phase, 173 PWDs have been selected, with 32 receiving prosthetic limbs immediately. Beneficiaries from Kasur, Faisalabad, Gujrat, Gujranwala, and Toba Tek Singh received artificial arms, legs, and assistive devices.

Addressing the ceremony, the provincial minister said the initiative reflects Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s vision of a “Disability-Free Punjab” and will enable PWDs to lead dignified and independent lives.
