Lahore: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Tuesday forecast smog and foggy conditions across most regions of Punjab, accompanied by cold and dry weather. The situation persisted on Wednesday, with Lahore once again topping the list of the world’s most polluted cities.

According to the PMD, dry weather is expected to continue in most districts of Punjab, while “very cold and dry weather is also likely in Kashmir, Murree, Galliyat and surrounding areas.” The department warned that smog and shallow fog patches may develop over plain areas during morning and night hours.

Data from the air quality monitoring platform IQAir showed Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) soaring to a staggering 455 early Tuesday, placing it firmly in the “hazardous” category. Other cities in the province also recorded dangerous pollution levels later in the day, with Multan at 615, Gujranwala at 378, Sialkot at 306, and Lahore at 246 by 10 p.m.

Environmental experts attribute Lahore’s worsening air quality to vehicular and industrial emissions, smoke from brick kilns, burning of crop residue and waste, and dust from ongoing construction activities.

Authorities have urged citizens to limit outdoor exposure, wear protective masks, and follow health advisories as smog continues to blanket Punjab’s major urban centers.
