
LAHORE: In a landmark initiative to preserve Punjab’s architectural legacy while revolutionising patient care, the provincial government has finalised a comprehensive restoration plan for Mayo Hospital.
Following the special directives by CM Maryam Nawaz, Asia’s oldest and largest healthcare institution is set to undergo a massive revitalisation aimed at restoring its historic buildings – most notably the world-renowned ‘Clock Ward’ – to their original architectural glory.
In this regard, Provincial Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique and Punjab Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman on Monday visited Mayo Hospital and reviewed the restoration plan.During the visit, it was decided that all historical parts of the hospital, including the famous ‘Clock Ward’, will be restored to their original ancient form so that the historical status of this heritage site is maintained.
The provincial minister and the chief secretary inspected various departments of the hospital where Secretary C&W Sohail Ashraf gave a detailed briefing on the various stages of the rehabilitation project.
Speaking on the occasion, Khawaja Salman said that providing best medical facilities to patients in government hospitals is the top priority of the government and with the special interest of CM Maryam Nawaz, the process of upgrading Mayo Hospital is going on rapidly. This project is to provide patients with the latest treatment as well as a quality environment.
Punjab chief secretary issued instructions to Communication and Works (C&W) Department to complete all the rehabilitation work within the stipulated time and to ensure that there is no hindrance in the treatment of patients during the construction work. He also urged the administration not to compromise on the quality of the work. During the visit, Secretary Health Azmat Mahmood, VC King Edward Medical University Prof Mahmood Ayaz and MS Mayo Hospital were also present. They also briefed about administrative matters and medical facilities.
