Japanese Delegation Visits Social Welfare Department Punjab, Meets Minister

Lahore: A Japanese delegation of disability inclusion experts met with Punjab Minister for Social Welfare and Bait-ul-Maal Sohail Shaukat Butt to discuss expanding Pakistan–Japan collaboration aimed at empowering persons with disabilities.

During the meeting, both sides reviewed existing facilities, support mechanisms, and rehabilitation services available in Punjab. They expressed a shared commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in disability welfare, particularly through enhanced service delivery and the exchange of best practices.

Minister Sohail Shaukat Butt briefed the delegation on key provincial initiatives, including the Chief Minister’s Himat Card Programme, provision of wheelchairs & assistive devices, rehabilitation services, and preparations for the upcoming CM Special Games scheduled for December. He also announced plans to establish an Independent Living Center and introduce modern training programmes designed to promote full inclusion of persons with disabilities across multiple sectors.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to inclusive development, the minister emphasized that Punjab would adopt international best practices in accessibility and disability welfare to ensure the dignified participation of persons with disabilities in both public and private spheres.

The meeting was attended by Director General Social Welfare Punjab Tariq Qureshi, President of Milestone Organization Shafiq ur Rehman, senior officials, and Consultant to the CRPD Provincial Council Tahir Pervaiz, who provided legal perspectives on disability rights and empowerment.
