LAHORE: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Thursday emphasized equality for all citizens, urging society to rise above majority-minority divides during Christmas celebrations at the Cathedral Church in Lahore. She joined Christian leaders in a cake-cutting ceremony, distributed Christmas cakes, and handed over Minority Cards and grants to deserving families.
The event featured interfaith activities, including Quran and Bible recitations, a choir performance by Kinnaird College students, and a violin rendition of the national anthem. Diplomats from the US, UK, and other countries attended, while children dressed as Santa Claus added to the festive spirit. Bishop Alexander John Malik conferred the title “Daughter of Punjab” on the CM, praising her people-centric policies.
Addressing the gathering, Maryam Nawaz announced an increase in Minority Cards from 75,000 to 100,000, directed authorities to resolve minority graveyard issues, and highlighted minority inclusion in provincial projects like the ‘Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar’ housing scheme, Rashan Card, Honhaar Scholarship, Dhee Rani, and Kisan Card programs. She reiterated that protecting minorities is a shared responsibility of the majority and that the Punjab government ensures minorities receive an equal share of resources.
She also expressed pride in the visible celebration of minority festivals, citing decorated cities, Christmas trees, and public festivities as symbols of Punjab’s inclusive spirit. Maryam Nawaz praised minority contributions in various fields and warned against any harm to minorities, pledging to stand “like a wall of lead” against injustice.
Separately, the CM paid tribute to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and PMLN President Nawaz Sharif on their birth anniversaries, highlighting their leadership and vision in building and strengthening Pakistan. She also congratulated security forces for a successful anti-terror operation in Kalat, acknowledging their role in safeguarding the nation.
